Spectra breast pumps at a glance

Spectra makes double electric pumps with tubing and bottles in two lines: the S series, the plug-in Spectra S2 Plus, the rechargeable Spectra S1 Plus and the pocket-size Spectra S9 Plus, and the Synergy Gold line, the Spectra Synergy Gold and Spectra Synergy Gold Portable, which let you set each breast on its own. We carry all of them through insurance.

Which Spectra breast pump is right for you?

Pick by where you’ll pump most, and whether your two sides need different settings.

Spectra S2 Plus
A quiet double pump for home or a desk near an outlet. Massage and expression modes, 12 suction levels, a night light and a 30 minute timer. It plugs into the wall and has no battery.
Spectra S1 Plus
The same pump as the S2 Plus with a built-in battery, about 3 hours a charge, Spectra says. For moms who pump at work, in the car or away from an outlet.
Spectra S1 Plus with tote and cooler
The S1 Plus plus a grey Spectra tote that fits up to a 13 inch laptop, a pink cooler bag with an ice pack and two extra bottles, for carrying milk home from work.
Spectra S9 Plus
The smallest Spectra we carry, about half a pound and rechargeable, made to fit a pocket or a bag. A good fit if you pump on the go a few times a day.
Spectra Synergy Gold
A plug-in pump with a separate suction setting for each breast, 15 levels and a speed you set. Spectra calls it the first pump of its kind to let you adjust each side on its own.
Spectra Synergy Gold Portable
A 1.5 lb rechargeable version with a motor for each breast and 12 levels per side. Spectra rates the battery at about 2 hours of double pumping.

Questions moms ask about Spectra breast pumps

Is a Spectra breast pump covered by insurance?

On most plans, yes. Some plans cover a Spectra in full, others add an upgrade fee, and not every plan offers every model. Start your order and pick your state and plan to see each pump you qualify for, with any fee, before you pay anything.

Which pumps have no upgrade fee on most plans?

The Zomee Z2, Zomee Fit, Zomee W1, Lansinoh DiscreetDuo Flow and Ameda Mya Joy Basic are covered in full on the plans we work with. If your plan adds a fee for a Spectra, the Zomee Z2 is a tabletop double pump like a Spectra.

Which Spectra breast pump is best?

The one that fits where you’ll pump. For home or a desk near an outlet, the Spectra S2 Plus is the simplest pick. If you pump away from an outlet, the Spectra S1 Plus is the same pump with a battery. For pumping on the go, the Spectra S9 Plus is the smallest. If your two sides respond differently, the Spectra Synergy Gold or Synergy Gold Portable sets each breast on its own.

What’s the difference between the Spectra S1, S2, S9 and Synergy Gold?

The S1 Plus and S2 Plus are the same pump with the same suction, modes and settings; Spectra says the only difference is the S1’s built-in battery. The S9 Plus is a much smaller rechargeable pump, about half a pound. The Synergy Gold is a plug-in pump with a separate suction setting for each breast, 15 levels and a speed you set, while the Synergy Gold Portable is a lighter rechargeable version with 12 levels per side and preset speeds.

How strong is Spectra suction?

Spectra’s product pages rate the S1 Plus, S2 Plus and both Synergy Golds at up to 270 mmHg; Spectra’s own FAQ says level 12 on the S1 and S2 reaches 250 mmHg. Our comparison chart lists the S9 Plus at 260 mmHg. For comparison, Zomee rates its Z2 at 300 mmHg.

Does Spectra make a wearable breast pump?

None of the Spectra pumps we carry is a wearable. They all use flanges, tubing and bottles. The Spectra S9 Plus is the closest, small enough for a pocket. If you want a pump that sits in your bra with no tubes, look at the Zomee Fit or the eufy S2 Pro.

How long does a Spectra battery last?

About 3 hours of power per full charge on the Spectra S1 Plus, which takes about four hours to charge, Spectra says. The Synergy Gold Portable runs at least 2 hours of double pumping on a full charge, and our chart lists the S9 Plus at about 150 minutes. The Spectra S2 Plus and Synergy Gold have no battery and run plugged in.

Are Spectra breast pumps quiet?

Spectra calls its pumps quiet, made for discreet sessions, and its FAQ says the S1 Plus is “as quiet as a mouse.” Spectra doesn’t publish a dB rating on its own site; its Amazon listing for the S2 Plus lists 45 dB. The Synergy Gold models also have a mute mode.

What warranty do Spectra pumps have?

Spectra gives a 2-year limited warranty on the pump and 90 days on parts for the S1 Plus, S2 Plus, Synergy Gold and Synergy Gold Portable. Our chart lists 2 years for the S9 Plus too. Every Spectra we carry is a closed system, so milk stays out of the tubing and motor.

Do I need a prescription to get a Spectra through insurance?

Yes, insurance requires one, but you don’t need it in hand to order. Give us your doctor’s details and we request the prescription for you. Most plans let your pump ship about 30 days before your due date.
