Questions moms ask about Ameda pumps
Is an Ameda breast pump covered by insurance?
For most plans, yes. In our October 2026 check of 211 insurance plans, the Ameda Mya Joy was $0 on every one. The Mya Joy with Tote was $0 on some plans and carried an upgrade fee of up to $85 on others. Start your order to see your own price before you pay anything.
What’s the difference between the Mya Joy and the Mya Joy with Tote?
Only the bag. Both come with the same pump, AC adapter, Dual HygieniKit, 25 and 28.5 mm flanges and spare valves and diaphragms. The tote listing adds Ameda’s black tote, with a zippered main compartment, a front zip pocket and two handles. It has no cooler or ice pack.
How strong is the Ameda Mya Joy?
Up to 250 mmHg in Expression mode, Ameda says, and up to 100 mmHg in Stimulation. It has 6 Stimulation levels and 12 Expression levels, and it switches to Expression on its own after 2 minutes. For comparison, Spectra lists the S1 and S2 at 270 mmHg.
How long do the Mya Joy batteries last?
About 1.5 hours of pumping on four fresh AA batteries, Ameda’s manual says, and the type of battery changes that. The batteries aren’t in the box and aren’t rechargeable in the pump. Near an outlet, plug in the AC adapter that comes with it.
Is the Ameda Mya Joy quiet?
Yes. Ameda rates it at 45 dB or less, quiet enough for an office or a car.
Is the Ameda Mya Joy a closed system?
Yes. Its HygieniKit has a barrier that keeps milk from backing up into the tubing, and Ameda calls it the only FDA-cleared pump kit that helps protect milk from contaminants. The tubing never touches milk, so it skips the sink after each session.
Is the Ameda Mya Joy hospital grade?
Ameda calls the Mya Joy “hospital strength” and files it under its single-user pumps, not its hospital-grade ones. If you used an Ameda HygieniKit in the hospital, Ameda says its flanges, bottles, lids and tubing work with the Mya Joy.
What warranty does the Ameda Mya Joy have?
A 2-year limited warranty, with Ameda’s ParentCare support. Ameda suggests replacing the valves and diaphragms about every 8 to 12 weeks.
Which pumps have no upgrade fee on most plans?
The Ameda Mya Joy Basic, Zomee Z2, Zomee Fit, Zomee W1 and Lansinoh DiscreetDuo Flow are covered in full on the plans we work with. If your plan adds a fee for the Mya Joy with Tote, the Mya Joy Basic is the same pump without the bag.
Do I need a prescription to get an Ameda through insurance?
Yes, insurance requires one, but you don’t need it in hand to order. Give us your doctor’s details and we request the prescription for you. Most plans let your pump ship about 30 days before your due date.
