Nipple shields for latch trouble and sore nipples
Medela Contact nipple shields are ultra-thin silicone shields worn over your nipple while you breastfeed. A cut-out shape keeps skin-to-skin contact where your baby’s nose rests. Two shields and a carry case come in each pack.
A short-term bridge that can keep breastfeeding going while you and your baby work it out.

Are nipple shields right for you?
Best for
- Latch-on trouble, including flat or inverted nipples
- Sore or cracked nipples that need a break
- A fast let-down your baby struggles with
Maybe not for
- Using without guidance: Medela suggests checking with a lactation consultant, who can watch the latch and your baby’s weight
- Soothing between feeds: try hydrogel pads
Which nipple shield size do I need?
Measure the width of your nipple at rest, not your areola. The shield tip should be a little wider than your nipple, without pinching.
| Your nipple | Shield size |
|---|---|
| 12 mm or less | S16 mm |
| 13 to 16 mm | M20 mm |
| 17 mm or more | L24 mm |

Why the Contact shape
- Cut-out design
- Leaves more of your skin against your baby. Turn it toward their nose.
- Ultra-thin silicone
- Soft and taste-free, made without BPA.
- Shapes the nipple
- Medela says it gently draws out flat or inverted nipples to trigger the suck reflex.
- Carry case
- Keeps the pair clean in your diaper bag.
Questions moms ask about nipple shields
How do I put a nipple shield on?
Wet the rim with drinking water, turn the tip halfway inside out, center it over your nipple with the cut-out toward your baby’s nose, then smooth the edges down so the tip pops out and seals.
How do I clean them?
Rinse in cold water, wash in warm soapy water, rinse and dry after every use. Once a day, boil for 5 minutes or run them through the dishwasher.
How long should I use a nipple shield?
Medela calls shields a short-term aid. A lactation consultant can help you plan when to wean off, and keep an eye on your baby’s weight while you use one.
Get your breast pump through insurance
Most health plans, including Marketplace plans, must cover a breast pump under federal rules (HealthCare.gov). We check your plan, get the prescription from your doctor, and ship a covered pump to your door. Still pregnant? A virtual prenatal lactation consult can be covered too.
Start your order through insurance
Don’t see your plan? We work with hundreds, including state Medicaid programs. Questions first? See our pumping FAQ.
