Medela’s hospital pumping pattern, in a pump for home
The Medela Pump In Style Pro is the next generation of Medela’s Pump In Style. Medela built its pumping pattern to be similar to Symphony, which it calls the #1 pump used in hospitals, and added 16 levels with lights that show where you are.
If you pump at home a few times a day, it’s small, simple and familiar from the first session.

Is the Pump In Style Pro right for you?
Best for
- Pumping at home or at a desk, close to an outlet
- Moms who used Symphony in the hospital and want the same levels and modes at home
- Pumping several times a day, straight into bottles
- Anyone who wants few parts and quick cleanup
Maybe not for
- Pumping away from an outlet. It has no battery; the Spectra S1 Plus has one built in.

Lights that show your level and mode
Medela added these to the Pro so you always know where your session stands.
- 16 level lights
- They ring the tubing port and light up as you turn suction up or down.
- Mode light
- A drop under the port glows orange in stimulation and white in expression.
- Starts gently
- Every session opens in stimulation, then switches to expression on its own after 60 seconds.
- Four buttons
- On/off, let-down, and up and down for suction. Nothing to scroll through.
What’s new since the MaxFlow
- A Symphony-like pattern
- Medela says the vacuum builds quickly, holds gently and releases softly, for milk flow and comfort.
- 16 levels, not 10
- The same 16 levels as Symphony, so you can pick up at home where you left off.
- Level and mode lights
- New on the Pro, so you can see your suction level and mode at a glance.
- Same compact look
- Medela kept the size moms liked and says the noise level stayed the same.
Fewer parts, quicker cleanup

Questions moms ask about the Medela Pump In Style Pro
How much does the Medela Pump In Style Pro Double Electric Breast Pump cost with insurance?
With insurance, the Medela Pump In Style Pro Double Electric Breast Pump costs $0 to $120, depending on your plan. Many plans cover it in full; others add an upgrade fee. Check your coverage and we’ll tell you your exact cost before you order.
How strong is the Medela Pump In Style Pro suction?
Up to 295 mmHg at its peak, per Medela’s comparison chart, across 16 levels in each mode. Medela says typical use tops out at 240 mmHg, and the Spectra S1 and S2 list 270 mmHg, so the Pro’s peak is higher on paper and its typical top is lower. Medela’s product page doesn’t print a number and points to the manual.
Is this the Pump In Style with MaxFlow?
It’s the model that replaced it. Medela calls the Pro the next generation of Pump In Style and no longer lists the MaxFlow on its US site. If your doctor or your plan still says “Pump In Style”, this is the pump we ship. You can tell it by “pump in style pro” on top and the lights when it’s on.
How do I put the Medela Pump In Style Pro together?
Medela’s quick start has five steps: 1. Wash the kit parts. 2. Disinfect them (before first use). 3. Assemble the dry parts: shield on the connector with its membrane, bottle underneath. 4. Insert the tubing, one side for single pumping or both for double. 5. Plug in and power on. Medela has a video at medela.qrd.by/pnspro-video-en.
How do I clean the Medela Pump In Style Pro?
Take apart the shield, connector, membrane, bottle and lid, then wash them after every use. Medela says to rinse in cold water, soak in warm soapy water for 5 minutes and air dry, or use the top rack of the dishwasher. The dishwasher’s top rack works too, for everything except the tubing. Disinfect before first use and once a day by boiling for 10 minutes. Never wash or rinse the tubing.
Where do I buy replacement parts for the Pump In Style Pro?
Medela sells spare connectors, membranes, tubing and power adapters separately, through its Extra Pump Parts page, Medela’s own supply store and Amazon. Replace the tubing if you ever find condensation, milk or mold in it. Call us if you’re not sure which part you need.
Does the Medela Pump In Style Pro have a battery?
No. It’s plug-in only, with the A/C adapter in the box. If you need to pump away from an outlet, the Spectra S1 Plus has a built-in battery.
Which breast shield sizes come in the box?
Two 21 mm and two 24 mm PersonalFit Plus shields. Medela also sells 18 mm and 27 mm shields that fit this pump. If neither size in the box feels right, call us and we’ll help you find yours.
How loud is the Medela Pump In Style Pro?
Medela doesn’t publish a decibel rating for the Pro. It says the noise level stayed the same as the previous Pump In Style.
Is the Medela Pump In Style Pro hospital grade?
Medela describes the Pro as “true hospital-grade performance, at home” and gives it a pumping pattern similar to its Symphony hospital pump, but it also calls it a single-user pump for home. We don’t use the label ourselves. The number to compare is suction: 295 mmHg peak.
Can I use the Medela Pump In Style Pro lying down?
Medela doesn’t publish guidance on pumping lying down or reclined. Check the manual or call us if you want to pump in bed.
Should I pick the Pump In Style Pro or the Spectra S2 Plus?
Both are tabletop, plug-in double pumps. The Pro peaks at 295 mmHg with 16 levels and level lights; the Spectra S2 Plus lists 270 mmHg and 12 levels, with a night light and timer. Pick the Pro if you used Symphony in the hospital.
